5 Tips for Making your House a Home
Since being indoors more is looking like the reality for us this season, I’ve been inspired to make my apartment feel even more like home and wrote a few tips for anyone who might be looking to do the same! Having a warm welcoming place that feels like a hug is a privilege and these are some things that help me so much when taking on a decorating job
Small changes can make a huge difference: While keeping a warm open homey feel is important to a lot of us, we’re also in the midst of uncertain times. I feel it’s important to mention that a lot of the design elements and items in my space were put together over the course of a year, and even the newer additions took a lot of thought and budgeting before I decided on purchases. When taking on new interior projects, do what works for you, your budget and your timeline! It will all come together eventually, and sometimes the process is the most fun part!
Utilize your natural light: Although my apartment looks light and bright, I really only have one window. I thought a lot about the lighting in my home and opted for an apartment that had south-facing windows because I wanted as much bright light streaming in as possible. Having brighter natural lighting is key for me to feel like I’m in a more open, vibrant space. Bonus Tip: Keeping the walls and ceilings a light color or bringing in a light-colored rug can help make your space feel larger and more open.
Add plants--real plants: Real plants can really make a space come alive and even assist in making the air in a smaller space feel less stuffy. Now that a lot of us are home more, it’s the perfect time to find plants that you enjoy and learn more about their needs. It’s also a bonus for those of us who don’t have pets, but have that innate need to nurture something--ha!
Play around with textures and shapes: My favorite part of decorating is combining different shapes and textures to create variations of levels and eye-catching areas around my home. I really like to add a mix of vintage or thrifted items with newer more modern pieces to add a more styled-eclectic feel. My favorite example of this is on my coffee table, including my modern/minimalist circle vase with a shell tray I used as a candle and matchstick holder. These pieces add different levels and shapes to my coffee table area and really elevate it as a centerpiece of the room. I also include different types of woven wood-like Wicker or Rattan to add texture throughout my place!
Create a harmonious space with round edges: This may be more of my own personal preference, but from my coffee table to my bookshelves and my accent chair, I found that including furniture pieces with softer edges created an easier flow in my otherwise tighter space. Round edges contrast nicely with sharper edges that may be more common in the home and create a nicer and just help things flow within a room overall.
That’s it for this post! I hope you found these tips helpful. If you did, I added my top 3 additional tips over on my instagram page so be sure to take a look over there for more ways to make your house feel like home!
