Winter Wardrobe Transition w/ Schmidts Naturals
After my last post on my Summer to Fall Wardrobe Transition, I was so excited about the feedback you all gave that I wanted to make one for Fall to Winter. It’s that transitional time of year again, and as the weather cools down I'm switching from cardigans to coats and even cozier knits.
Although going from crisp Fall air to rainy Winter weather can seem like a drag, early wardrobe prep can sometimes help the seasonal switch feel more exciting—at least, it does for me! I love peeking through my closet, bringing out my favorite winter coat and pairing it alongside some new pieces I have collected over the past months. If you have a clothing rail, it can even help to change up the look and feel of your space by having a new set of colorful coats, tops and sweaters out on display. Wet weather aside, a new season can mean new beginnings and a new way to elevate your wardrobe by getting creative and mixing and matching selections from your closet!
Tips for taking care of knits:
Use a disposable razor to gently remove excess pilling.
Because knit sweaters are generally able to withstand more wear, generally waiting 3-5 wears to wash can extend the life of your garment.
Hand washing your sweaters is a good way to help keep the fabric in tact. If you do pop them in the washing machine, make sure to use gentle detergent and set it on a cold rinse.
Letting your sweaters air dry is a great way to maintain the shape of any knit while avoiding any damage or shrinkage excess heat can cause.
With a washer and dryer at my new place it’s much easier to prep my winter wardrobe and make sure my clothes are looking good and smelling fresh. When it comes to caring for my knits and cool-weather wear, I struggled to find a detergent that I felt was gentle enough while also keeping my clothes smelling good. I recently tried out a new detergent that my friends at Schmidts Naturals sent over and was so impressed I had to include it in this post!
Before swapping to Schmidts, I was using a more general detergent that smelled nice, but I knew was pretty harsh on my clothing and likely wasn’t very good for me either. Schmidts detergent is still tough on stains but completely free of bleach, artificial dyes, artificial fragrances and preservatives like MIT/BIT or propylene glycol.
Each bottle gives you 66 loads of beautifully smelling clothing by the end of the wash. I have been trying out two of their new signature scents; Amber + Aloe is a tropical aroma with a hint of sweet warming amber but their Lavender + Sage is my current fave right now. It’s a very clean and soothing scent; I LOVE washing my sheets with it—it’s so relaxing to climb into bed afterward! Swapping out my old detergent was kind of a no brainer after trying Schmidts’ new product. If you’re curious to try it out for yourself, you can find it at your nearest whole foods!
Bonus Tips for layering winter clothes:
If you’re going for a monochromatic look, try adding in some textures by way of a knit sweater or a ribbed top for more definition and a little more variety.
If the triple layered look isn’t for you, (long sleeve, sweater, coat or puffer) try swapping out one of the tops for an oversized scarf. This look helps to create the illusion of layers and will still keep you warm without that feeling of drowning your clothing.
